Poor Riley Poe. After rescuing her little brother from evil vampires Valerian and Victorian Arcos in Afterlight, the potty-mouthed tattoo artist is now seducing guardian vampire Eli Dupré and thrashing through torrid dreams sent by the Arcos brothers, who almost "turned" her by injecting her with a few drops of their venom. Lurching from one bout of "heated, raging hormones" to another, Riley's senses become more acute, and soon she's thirsting for Eli's superhuman attributes and feeling surprising sympathy for Victorian while Valerian sends her mental images of his bloodsucking binges. She must put aside these distractions to join the Dupré family's good-vampire sally and cleanse Charleston, S.C., of its newly minted undead monsters. Jasper's outrageous tale of sex and sadism verges on the unintentionally hilarious, requiring readers to suspend vast quantities of disbelief.
