Two years ago, the murder of a neighbor tore three best friends apart—now the killer is going to walk free and the ex-friends are going to have to face the past—and each other—in another twisty thriller from the New York Times bestselling co-author of The Agathas.
Grace, Henry, and Ally grew up together on the same block. They used to be best friends—until Grace's testimony put Henry's brother, Jake, away for killing their English teacher. Now, two years later, Ally and Henry hate Grace, and Grace is doubting what she thinks she saw that night.
It feels like everyone's getting a second chance, then, when due to a mistrial, Jake is suddenly released. And Henry knows his brother is innocent, but when Grace reaches out to say she’s rethinking what she saw the night of the murder, Jake’s reaction is confusing. He doesn’t want Henry—or Grace—getting involved.
For Ally not getting involved isn’t an option, and there’s nothing Grace can say to convince Ally she’s not the enemy. But can Ally afford to push Grace out when she’s one of the only other people willing to believe in Jake’s innocence?
The clock is ticking. Jake’s new trial date is about to be set, and he's sure to be found guilty again unless there's new evidence to prove he's innocent. Grace, Henry, and Ally are going to have to decide whether you can trust an old friend now that they’re your enemy.

Former friends reunite to exonerate a convicted murderer. Two years ago, Grace Topham testified that she saw Jake Hanson going into high school English teacher Miriam Appelbaum's backyard the night Ms. Appelbaum was killed. The person she saw was wearing Jake's unusually decorated jean jacket, but now Grace is wondering whether she might have made a mistake. Jake has just been released from prison on a technicality, and the prospect of another trial looms. Grace approaches her former best friends, Ally Copeland and Henry Hanson (Jake's brother), both of whom have shunned her since she told the police about seeing Jake. The three of them form an uneasy alliance as they try to figure out who the real culprit is. Ally wants to be a journalist like her late father, who was killed in a car accident two months before Ms. Appelbaum's murder, and her investigative skills help the trio uncover other crimes at school and in their community before the final, shocking reveal. Lawson's latest, which is as much about the friendship dynamics among Ally, Grace, and Henry as it is a whodunit, will keep teen mystery fans up into the wee hours, eager to see how the various threads come together. Central characters present white. A twisty and fast-paced mystery.(Mystery. 12-18)

Grades 9-12 Henry, Grace, and Ally grew up as best friends, but the friendship shattered when Grace gave a testimony in court resulting in Henry's brother, Jake, going to prison for murdering the trio's English teacher. Two years after his arrest, Jake is released due to a mistrial, and he goes home. A lot of people in town are not happy about this; they've already made Henry's family miserable. Henry and Ally, the only two who believe Jake is innocent, want to disprove Grace's testimony before Jake's retrial, but they can't do it without Grace's help. Grace is willing to help because she thinks that it's not just possible, but very likely, that she was mistaken about what she saw. The three follow every lead and solve not one mystery but two. The friends take turns narrating the story in distinct personal voices, and Grace's growth from metaphorical doormat to strong-willed and setting boundaries is particularly appealing. Lawson's ingenious twists and turns will intrigue mystery fans right to the unexpected end.

Gr 7 Up-Two years ago, the town of Brawner was torn apart when a popular high school English teacher was murdered and one of her students was convicted of the crime. But now the conviction has been overturned, and the accused killer is coming home. The whole town is on edge, especially Henry, Ally, and Grace. They used to be friends, but once Henry's brother, Jake, was convicted of their teacher's murder, and Grace's testimony helped put him away, their friendship seemed to be over. Now that Jake is back, Grace isn't so sure of what she saw that night, and the three former friends reluctantly team up to try to get to the truth of what happened. The chapters alternate points of view among the three characters, and sometimes it can be hard to distinguish between their voices; many of the characters' secrets seem inserted only to drive the plot. Still, the several twists the story takes will keep readers guessing, even if the character development feels thin. All main characters are cued white. VERDICT A fine choice for collections where thrillers are in high demand.-Dana West
