The second book in the Book Club series by popular and prolific African American author Alers, following The Sea Caf (2020), focuses on prodigy Leah Kent. After graduating high school at 15 and Vanderbilt University on a full academic scholarship at 18, Leah is pursued and seduced by a prominent Richmond attorney who is twice her age. Pregnant with twins, Leah marries him and lives a life of wealth but no freedom. Thirty years later, after being hospitalized after a nearly fatal beating by her husband, Leah heads to Coates Island off the coast of North Carolina to rejoin her friend Kayana Johnson, co-owner of a caf. Kayana, newly married, offers Leah the use of the apartment over the caf, and sparks soon fly between Leah and Derrick, Kayana's widowed brother and business partner. While there are lovely descriptions of clothing, home furnishings, and delectable food, a discussion among Leah and two book club members is one of the tale's most enjoyable aspects. Novels by Tracey Livesay, Brenda Jackson, and Reese Ryan offer other steamy romances featuring affluent multicultural characters.

After a chance meeting, 18-year-old overachiever and recent college graduate Leah Berkley is doggedly pursued by wealthy and distinguished lawyer Alan Kent, who is twice her age. Then an unplanned pregnancy leads Leah to agree to marry Alan, and she is never allowed to forget that she's unworthy of her allowance into Alan's stately Richmond, VA, family. For the next 30 years, Leah focuses on her twin sons and her career as an educator, looking the other way while Alan continues his womanizing ways. When a disagreement turns violent, Leah retreats back to Coates Island, NC, where she had spent some time the previous summer and developed close friendships with women in her book club. Her friend Kayana Johnson provides the safe haven Leah needs to recuperate. Soon, the attraction between Leah and Kayana's brother Derrick becomes undeniable, but they'll both need to be ready to move on. VERDICT Alers (The Seaside Caf) doesn't gloss over baggage that comes with mature love in this second-chance romance, but wordy descriptions tend to bog down the pacing of the book. Best suited for libraries where the first book in the series or the author are popular.--Nicole J. Suarez, Frankfort P.L. District, Frankfort, IL
