From spells to mindfulness, this work offers some methods to help boost holistic health. Initial chapters address the practices of tarot, astrology, witchcraft, energy work, and spirit guides, while later ones examine body positivity, therapy, mindfulness, and creative pursuits. Throughout the book, Scelsa uses a broad definition of energy that leaves plenty of room for individual connections, spiritual or otherwise, while always stressing that readers should employ these strategies in ways that are helpful for them personally. She candidly discusses her own journey of navigating depression and anxiety. Her tone is remarkably approachable and nonjudgmental--it's like you've struck up a conversation with a more experienced relative or family friend who's more than willing to talk shop while adamantly wanting what is best for you. This dialogue extends to actual conversations Scelsa has with experienced professionals chosen with care for each chapter. They each speak from diverse perspectives concerning race, queerness, and physical and mental conditions. Scelsa gives a primer on the basics of each set of tools, including simple introductory exercises at the end of each chapter. Whether readers are seasoned practitioners or baby witches--or just open-minded people interested in expanding their self-care toolboxes--this is a fantastic resource for getting a new perspective on why these practices are potentially valuable and how they interrelate to one's physical, mental, and metaphysical well-being. A valuable resource filled with productive possibilities. (author's note, references) (Self-help. 12-18)

In a welcoming volume on self-care approached via practical and magical means—including tarot, astrology, witchcraft, and mindfulness practices—Scelsa (Improbable Magic for Cynical Witches) lends guidance for bettering one’s mental health by sharing her own experiences and interviewing experts in their respective fields. An introductory chapter presents the concept of “old-school new age” tools and remedies meant to aid in a more holistic understanding of one’s own psyche. Scelsa shares that, at 15, she learned that the “tons of water” in her natal chart contributes to her emotional nature, a realization that transitions this internalized “flaw” to, instead, a “part of me that needed extra attention.” In subsequent chapters, the author outlines specific tools, giving an overview of the practice and its utility alongside insight from expert practitioners: chapter two (“Astrology”) features Jeff Hinshaw, a soul-centered astrologist and tarot user. Little time is spent exploring the cultural history and significance of each ritual, but Scelsa sensitively emphasizes inclusion and curating affirming spaces for audiences across myriad identities. It’s a useful starting point for those looking for a wider awareness of the possibilities of magic and magical thinking—one that encourages self-understanding, self-confidence, curiosity, and compassion. Ages 12–up. Agent: Brianne Johnson, HG Literary.

Grades 8-12 This book is a combination of personal history, explorations of occult practices, interviews, self-help, hands-on how-to guides, reassurances, and affirmations. The result is a useful guide that should help magic--minded teens get their lives together, or at least feel better about themselves. All this information is delivered through an engaging narrative where the author shares her life story and shows how her involvement with various ancient practices made profound differences in her feelings of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-determination. These practices include astrology, tarot, witchcraft (celebrations, spell work, manifestations, divination), energy and spirit guides, body awareness, therapy, mindfulness, and creativity. All are explored in lengthy chapters that incorporate conversations with current practitioners, explanations and directions of how the activity works, helpful charts and diagrams, and discussions of their benefits, lasting effects, and place in the general cosmos. The tone is upbeat and benevolent, the advice is practical, and references are promised (although not available at the time of review). This respectful, in-depth guide will make a handsome addition to collections that support a spiritual-minded clientele.
