What do you know about the American Indian rights movement? You may have heard about modern pipeline protests, but this resistance has its roots in the early years of the United States, when the government began stripping American Indians of their rights and forcing them off their lands onto reservations. What are the main concerns of the American Indian rights movement today? What challenges have activists faced throughout history? Find out about how important players like Sacheen Littlefeather and Russell Means paved the way for current activists and discover how activists are still fighting for better living conditions and environmental justice today.

Gr 3-5-Each of these timely volumes opens with an introduction outlining a well-known demonstration, from the 1969 Stonewall Inn marches to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests in 2016, before turning to history. Sidebar features include profiles of folks like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Gloria Steinem, Marsha P. Johnson, and Sacheen Littlefeather. The design in each title will appeal to younger readers; short pieces of text are often set against a color block. VERDICT While not trying to be comprehensive, each title sensitively and honestly lays out the history, background, and recent events in its respective movement. Recommended.

Grades 4-7 Opening with the 2016 protest against the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline through sacred Standing Rock Sioux tribal grounds, this entry in the Movements That Matter series (4 titles) traces the history of the American Indian rights movement. Complemented by archival photographs, it continues with an overview of how the U.S. government stripped American Indians of their land, rights, and culture. Although American Indians resisted from the beginning, the text focuses on the movement in the 1960s and 70s, when activists began holding large public protests. As it discusses the movement's key concerns, including education and land issues, the book also introduces its leaders and historic protests, such as the occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 to 1971. Other sections address sports mascots, the environment, and the future of American Indian rights.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2018, American Library Association.)
