Transform your knitting with 17 stunning colorwork patterns that celebrate vibrant designs from top to bottom, perfect for everyday elegance!

Instead of restricting stranded knitting to only the yoke of a sweater, the 17 patterns in this collection embrace colorwork from top to bottom. Modern and traditional motifs are used in new ways to create an array of styles and shapes, from cardigans, hoodies, and short sleeve sweaters to cozy pullovers, ponchos, and even a dress. A variety of colorful yarns are used to varying effects: mohair for soft halos, merino wool for stitch definition, and alpaca for lightweight warmth. The sweaters are unique and sure to be noticed, yet are comfortable and appropriate for everyday wear.

Patterns are sized from small to extra large and are appropriate for intermediate knitters comfortable with sweater-making techniques and colorwork. An illustrated tutorial section provides a refresher on stranded knitting, if needed, as well as instructions on how to work a few possibly unfamiliar stitches and techniques. Knitters will be absorbed from start to finish as they add many new favorite sweaters to their collection!

Just the use of ""Fair Isle"" in the title indicates that these 17 patterns are not for beginners, as Brauneis underscores. (Fun fact: the nomenclature originated from a 55-resident Scottish island.) Brauneis shows that the intricacies of knitting two or more colors in a row/round can go far beyond the notion of Fair Isle, featuring such technical niceties as floats, complicated increases and decreases, a different kind of bind off, short rows, and more. The designs veer toward traditional, each including written directions, occasional tips, and charts to follow. Styles tend to favor the raglan shoulder, with a nod to innovation here and there, such as a V-neck sweater with fluffy balloon sleeves and a sweater featuring wide raglan-shoulder stripes. While recommended yarns favor more expensive European brands, crafters can check yarnsub.com for substitutions.
