Life in Bodega Bay on the rugged, foggy coast of northern California has been pretty quiet since Alfred Hitchcock filmed The Birds there. But antiques dealer Toby Sandler learns that his new business partner Charlie has been found dead on an abandoned boat in the harbor. When the local sheriff discovers that Charlie's newly acquired Hitchcock artifacts and a painting of an angel are missing, he enlists Toby and his wife, Nora Barnes, an art historian, in the investigation.
Local tales about Hitchcock's famous film, and some digging into the region's past as a Russian outpost, provide Toby and Nora with clues to the existence of a lost masterpiece. Convinced that this forgotten work may hold the key to the murder, Nora and Toby set out to find it. When Nora's trouble-prone sister Angie arrives, events take a surprising turn, leading to the uncanny realm of angel reading and putting Nora and her family in danger. As Nora and Toby investigate matters both criminal and otherworldly, Nora realizes that some mysteries in life may be too deep to solve.

Draine and Hinden’s second outing for married couple Nora Barnes and Toby Sandler (after 2011’s Murder in Lascaux) offers evocative descriptions of the Northern Californian coastline and detailed insights into the unique world of Russian iconography. Nora and Toby, an art historian and an antique dealer, respectively, combine their expertise after Charlie Halloran, with whom Toby owned a gallery, is found murdered in a boat in Bodega Bay, the location of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds. However, their investigations soon lead to an even greater mystery: the location of 15th-century icon painter Andrei Rublev’s long-rumored, long-missing personal copy of his famous painting, The Holy Trinity. Colorful characters like Barnes’s beautiful and newly pious sister, Angie, and affable college professor Al Miller keep the proceedings fresh and unpredictable. Although the book occasionally bogs down in minutiae, the unexpected but satisfying conclusion is worth the wait.

Is a missing Russian icon a motive for murder? California art historian Nora Barnes and her antiques dealer husband, Toby Sandler, venture forth from their home in Bodega Bay, famous as the spot Alfred Hitchcock's birds attacked, to investigate the murder of Toby's new business partner, Charlie Halloran, who'd recently moved his things to Toby's store in Sonoma County after a breakup with his business and life partner. When Charlie's body is found in a wrecked sailboat and a break-in is discovered at the store, Deputy Sheriff Dan Ellis, Nora and Toby's friend, asks for their help. Nora soon identifies Charlie's last purchases, a Russian icon and a set of storyboards from The Birds. Though neither is thought to be worth much, both have vanished. The seller got them from a former lover descended from a Russian family, early inhabitants of the area. When Toby finally finds the missing objects, Nora takes the icon to an expert in Wisconsin, where they discover evidence that it's part of a valuable old triptych. Nora's younger sister, Angie, who's visiting, has been consulting Sophie Redmond, an "angel reader," in an attempt to make a major decision in her life. When Nora joins her at Sophie's apartment, she sees another part of the triptych hanging on the wall. All these investigations turn up several interested parties, including the Russian Mafia, who may be willing to kill to get what they want. Apart from its surprise ending, Nora and Toby's second case (Murder in Lascaux, 2011) is most valuable for its information on icons, The Birds and early northern California history.
