Noble's gently paced Regency layers a sweet romance over an intriguing travelogue. Winnifred "Winn" Crane, daughter of a learned professor, is determined to prove the true identity of the painter of a famous work, and thereby earn a place in the all-male Historical Society. Her plans require her to travel to Germany, and Jason Cummings, duke of Rayne, agrees to accompany her to Dover, where she will embark on a ship to Europe. But plans go awry, and the pair must use every resource to survive their journey across Germany as Winn searches for the painter's letters and Jason gradually learns how to be more than just his title. The romance between Winn and Jason is gradual and comfortable, and as their burgeoning friendship evolves into a believable and captivating love, the story evolves into an outstanding and memorable tale.
