He seems to take particular pleasure recounting stories from his earliest days, when he was trying to make a living as a writer and editor in New York City. At these moments his voice is filled with affection for his life and the people in it. He shines, too, in the funniest stories, as when he tries to extricate a friend who gets stuck in a mud bath.
