      "Black Beauty", a first-person (first-horse?) tale of animal cruelty and animal welfare in nineteenth-century England, is here retold in simplified, dumbed-down language for early readers. Despite the linguistic vandalism and the short sentences and abrupt paragraphs, the abbreviated story may still engage horse-loving readers. The realistic black-and-white drawings add to the drama.
