The Max factor • If Ford has the Bill Bourke Special, then this is what you might call Holden’s HQ Monaro GTS 400. Hardcore Holden fans know it as the only Monaro that ever rolled off the production line with factory-fitted 400 cubic-inch V8 power. However, there’s a hidden secret to this car, along with a second Monaro which shared the same engine, which AMC has uncovered.

Like a cut snakesnake • The Ford Mustang has long been an iconic car. And that’s even before you add the name ‘Shelby’ in front of it. Limited numbers of genuine Shelby Mustangs are now built to order here in Australia… including the most potent of all Shelbys, the Super Snake.

Sandgropers’ odyssey • In recent editions of AMC we’ve documented the racing careers of Western Australians Tim Slako the late Wayne Negus. Part of what makes their stories so unique is the adversity they overcame just to be able to race their cars over on the east coast. Prior to 1976, there was still several hundred kilometres of unsealed road on the South Australian side of the Eyre Highway. Those epic cross-country journeys were included in each feature story but not in the detail, nor with the imagery that we have earthed for this feature.

Master mechanic • From Frank Matich in the 1960s and a stint overseas in Formula 1, to John Goss and then to Bob Morris and that emotional ’76 Bathurst win, he’s worked with the very best. This is the remarkable story of master race mechanic Bruce Richardson.

A very select group • With its entry into outright Supercars competition this year, Toyota is treading where very few marques have gone before in the long history of the Australian Touring Car Championship, as David Greenhalgh explains.

A Dodgy tale • You’ll still hear people laugh about the old Dodge Phoenix that raced at Bathurst in 1967. Sure, it wasn’t ever likely to trouble the fleet of new XR Falcon GTs, and of course it didn’t. But was it really nothing more than a joke entry? AMC sifted through the Phoenix’s ashes and discovered not only was it underestimated at Bathurst, it was also underrated as a high-performance road car.

Early Birds! • Last year was a big one for Ford fans as the blue oval brigade commemorated the 100th birthday of Ford Australia. The year-long celebrations were rounded out at the end of 2025 in Tasmania with the 24th running of the Early Falcon Nationals.
