Krystin knows exactly what she wants: a husband, a horse, and a place to hang all her competitive rodeo blue ribbons. But when none of the eligible bachelors in Montana end up being right for her, she turns to reality TV. On Hopelessly Devoted, Krystin will compete against dozens of other women for the heart of this season's Hopeless Romantic, Josh Rosen. She's determined to win the perfect life she came here for—if she can just ignore the glossy brunette whose crimson smile gives her goosebumps. Lauren has never done anything for the right reasons—and she's definitely not on Hopelessly Devoted to win Josh's heart. Lauren's plan is simple: stay on the show long enough to build her social media following, and then gracefully leave when it's her turn to be eliminated. With enough followers, she'll finally have the clout to do whatever she wants—including come out of the proverbial walk-in closet. But the longer she stays on the show, the more she finds herself tangled up in a certain blonde's lasso. But neither contestant expects a heteronormative dating show to challenge their own deeply-ingrained ideas of who they are—and what they want. Fans of The Charm Offensive and Love Island will swoon for this sparkling debut romcom.

Writing and romantic partners Paulsen and Wang debut with a tremendously fun sapphic rom-com. Season 22 of the Bachelor-esque reality show Hopelessly Devoted has Josh Rosen looking for a wife—and 35 female contestants ostensibly hoping he’ll choose them. Included are rodeo queen Krystin, who has always felt there’s something missing in her life and tries to convince herself it’s a husband, and influencer Lauren, who’s a closeted lesbian. She wants to hang on long enough to gain online followers, but not long enough to break Josh’s heart. As the show takes contestants to Argentina and Costa Rica, Krystin struggles to accept that she feels a connection growing not with Josh but with Lauren. The authors expertly incorporate dating show staples like over-the-top excursions and cheesy on-camera dialogue while still keeping the plot surprising. Meanwhile the romance itself is a wonderful mix of sweet and steamy. Ripped from tabloid headlines (contestants fell for each other instead of the lead on the 2016 season of The Bachelor Australia and the 2018 season of The Bachelor Vietnam), this proves as deliciously addictive as the most bingeable reality show. Agent: Kristy Hunter, Knight Agency.

Mara Wilson and Lindsey Dorcus narrate a romance set on a reality-TV dating show. Krystin is appearing on "Hopelessly Devoted" to find a husband; Lauren is on the show to build her social media presence. Neither woman expects to fall for anyone, not even Josh, the show's hopeless romantic. Wilson brings sweet sincerity to her portrayal of Krystin, emphasizing her overall integrity and commitment to achieving her goals. In contrast, Dorcus highlights Lauren's more cynical outlook, both toward the show and toward life, without making her unpleasant. Both narrators focus on aspects of Krystin and Lauren that make them relatable and sympathetic, despite their often questionable choices. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Paulsen and Wang debut with a Bachelor-inspired romantic comedy about two women who turn the world of reality TV dating upside down. Former rodeo queen Krystin wants to get married and have kids, but none of the single men around her meet her specifications. So she joins the cast of Hopelessly Devoted, a show where dozens of women vie for the heart of this season's Hopeless Romantic, Josh. Lauren has never done anything for the right reasons, and she's definitely not on Hopelessly Devoted for them either. She hopes to gain social media followers and then leave when the time is right. Then Krystin catches Lauren's eye, and she finds that she doesn't want to leave after all. Can they break free of expectations and find love with each other? Mara Wilson and Lindsey Dorcus offer animated portrayals of Krystin, Lauren, Josh, and secondary characters. Though the narration is breezy and appropriately humorous, it also shows the characters' growth as they learn to follow their hearts. VERDICT A perfect summer listen for fans of Alison Cochrun's The Charm Offensive and reality TV dating shows.--Elyssa Everling
